Miracles, but make them small.

As a bigger guy I often dread flying, as airlines continue to compress leg room and seat width to squeeze more onto their ever diminishing number of flights. So imagine my surprise when I signed into the Southwest app yesterday to sign in for today’s flight 2 hours late only to find me positioned at A-16, the first general boarding position, for both my flights today. Well, ok! Obviously I got flagged by my rescheduling due to my flight cancellation on 12/31 and they did what they could to make today’s travel as comfortable and easy as possible. Not only that, but I took the window seat per my usual and a kind older lady took the aisle seat… and we managed to be one of only 3 rows without a middle seat denizen! So I’m relaxing as I type this and enjoying the universe paying me back for the stress and tears of two days ago.

I’m starting a 100-Book challenge for 2020, and I’m using the flight to get started. The first book of the year? The Starless Sea, by Erin Morgenstern, a gift from my Michigan Crimmas. So here’s to today, where it feels like luck is bending like a ta’averen around me to send me to my ancestral home.

Welcome to San Keros/Open Your Eyes Delay

Greetings, fellow wanderers of our fair city of San Keros,

There was an unexpected death in my family within the last few weeks, and the update schedule has gotten a tad delayed.  But rest assured–the story of Hrothgar Jones and Beth Kendall is far, far from over.  Regular weekly updates will recommence this week, with the series now reaching conclusion the first week of January.  My apologizes for extending the story into the New Year, but grief has a funny way of creeping into the best of your intentions and rendering them moot.

Following the conclusion of Open Your Eyes, WelcometoSanKeros.com will take a brief break of just two simple weeks, and then we will start unveiling content of the next story cycle!  Tales from the Miracle Season is just beginning, and the players are still gathering on the side of the stage.  They’re as anxious to meet you as you are to meet them.  And the City has its own ambitions…

Happy Birthday Update

Another year, another random blog post, right?  Well, in the spirit of the summer relaunch of latenightstirfry and the debut of new content from WelcometoSanKeros, I figured it was time to give a general life update so that anyone who’s curious can see the state of things.

On the home front, Andy and I celebrated our 18th anniversary and were allowed to serve two new feline overlords, Bailey and Keely.  I commissioned some gorgeous art at C2E2 this year, which I’ll do a separate post about.  It’s been a cocooning sort of year, really, as we’ve really dialed back our activity outside the house.  Some of our dear friends came to their senses and fled their S.A.D. and our presence by the space of a whole continent.  I’ve been slowly stripping down my comic pull list to just the characters and stories I’m genuinely passionate about.  I keep trying to organize my comics to determine what I’m ready to let go of, but I never complete the process.  I’ve been undergoing a small spiritual awakening too, which is welcome since its been too long.  We’ll see where that takes me.

As for writing, obviously there are things afoot.  My short story “Nothing Important Happened Today” got published in the Truth Beyond Paradox anthology.  This site is undergoing a major redesign this spring and early summer.  Later this summer I’ll be launching my major writing project in truth , but the web portal is already up at WelcometoSanKeros.com.  I have a few other smaller projects queued as well, and those will post here on latenightstirfry.  Some of those projects may end up referencing the World-a-Week Challenges I did a few years back and are still available here on the site.I also am going to be going pretty heavily into research mode, as a lot of the pieces are still missing certain crucial elements.

I’m hoping to go to HeroesCon this year, but also paint the garage.  I’d like to pay off credit cards, but redesign the front gardens. I plan on finally mastering the art of weeding without being scared off by arachnids.  I desperately need a new phone, and am hopeful for the opportunity to visit family and friends.  Which is to say, life goes on as it ever does.

I’m writing this as Owein sits purring on my chest, thinner than he’s ever been.  There’s not much that it seems we can do about it.  I’m deliberately not writing much more about that because I don’t think my heart can take it.  I need to hit the gym and lose some pounds, myself.  I wish we could share them somehow.

So that’s the sort of state of things.  If you feel like giving me an awesome birthday present, snag a copy of Truth Beyond Paradox (Only $3.99 digital!) and give my story a glorious review on Goodreads!  Word of mouth is everything.

And be Excellent to each other–and to yourselves.

Welcome to San Keros–now open for business!

Welcome to San Keros–A City of Magic Opens its Doors Summer 2016

At last, its time to pull back the curtain on Secret Project 1 (SP1, for those of you who still follow the site).  Welcome to San Keros is now open for business!  This is the web portal for a shared world of web fiction, novels, and short stories that I’ve been slowly building over the last 10 or so years.  A blend of neomythic fiction, urban fantasy, and horror, this shared universe can only be found at WelcometoSanKeros.com.    Right now, the site is merely an introduction to the world of San Keros, but the fictive works themselves will begin later this summer.  Meanwhile, I’ll be posting small excerpts, tidbits, and introducing you to some of the city’s most colorful characters.

Also by late summer, latenightstirfry will once again become the spot to read all of my non-San Keros related fiction.  This site will also turn into an author’s blog, keeping everyone apprised of what I’m working on and what will be released next.  I hope you’ll follow along.

So go visit San Keros.  I promise–it will not be what you think.

It will be more.

A Brief Update…

James Rigney Jr. passed into the Embrace of the Mother 8 years ago, impossible as that seems to me.  He was one of the brightest stars in the firmament of fantasy and speculative fiction authors that have inspired me over the years, so I figured I’d acknowledge his passing and give a brief update as to the state of things, in case anyone checks this space after two years of abandonment.

I’ve kept my promise, pretty much, about not posting anything regarding current projects until they’re at least at beta stage.  Sadly, the past few years have been very slow going on all the projects.  I over committed, as I do, and everything suffered as a result. I’ve battled some personal demons, and lost our cat, Griffin, in my absence from this page. Honestly, a lot has happened and I’m not in the same head-space as I was when I started this project.  I’m in the progress of figuring out where my head is at, and where my heart is leading me.

One benefit of all these delays is that the universe I’m building through my main sequence is linked and organized much tighter than its ever been.  I’m hoping, and this is only a hope, to have something substantive to announce next year.  It’ll take me that long to figure out what projects I want to release, and what needs more work, and what I need to scrap altogether.

It hasn’t all been dour.  I saw a bunch of concerts this Summer, and hope to see a few more this fall.  Some comics were good and some movies were good and some TV shows were good and some books were good.  Recently, I’ve really been asked to take a close look at what I do and why I do it, and how my actions will impact where I want to be.  That question was answered easily 10 years ago, but its a bit harder to come up with a coherent answer now.  I’m working on it.

So that’s it, really.  I’ll periodically update this space, and I promise to announce when I will announce things as soon as its realistic to announce them.

If you would like to join my beta reader team, please contact me at latenightstirfry@gmail.com.

What’s been going on? Why is this site dead?

Hello there, world.

Looks like this site has gotten pretty dead, hunh?

This was supposed to be my website for all of my written work…and then somehow it got too ambitious, too quickly.  I kept adding features that my life, as it was then, didn’t give me enough time to adequately support.  I write slower than some people, I’ve learned over the last year or so. A LOT slower.  It’s taken me a long time to find a consistent voice, and some projects that come from myself, rather than random small snippets that came from all of you few readers who helped contribute.  By the way–I appreciate those contributions more than I can say.  It helped get me through some rough times, in fact.

So.  Writing.

I have some exciting stuff planned, but I’ve learned a bit over the last 2 years.  No announcements, no teasers, no NOTHING until I have a first draft locked and loaded and out to beta readers for edits and suggestions.  I have several irons in the fire right now, and this site will still be the place to access them all, if in a different way.

Don’t bury me, I’m not dead yet.

Change is Coming in 2015.  Meanwhile, I’ll post random updates here to keep you all apprised.

Thanks for stopping by

Tumblr Tuesday: Week 6

So…we took a brief vacation for week 5 (my mom was visiting, it was a good excuse) but today we’re back with a vengeance!  This week’s Tumblr Tuesday theme is “Revelation”.  Not in the biblical sense, but rather that part of the story in which the plot turns upon a dime and new vistas appear over the horizon, or the protagonist reaches the penultimate moment of their tale.  This isn’t the climax to the tale–this is that moment where the slow walk to resolution becomes a sprint, when what was hidden becomes revealed.

Submissions this week are for PEOPLE/A Person.  This can include an animal.  Ideally, an image that speaks to you of ‘Revelation’, but any picture of anyone (human or otherwise) will work just fine.  Submissions are due by Friday at noon.

Please submit an image! The last submission call got no replies, so nothing got written.  My goal is to get a story out, with your help, every week.  If you aren’t feeling inspired with this week’s challenge, please DO forward the submission call to folks who might be.  Thanks!

Tumblr Tuesday: Week 4

Thusly was born the fourth of the Tumblr Tuesdays!  Below is my picks for my favorites for this week culled from my tumblr stream. Links should work this week to the owners/original posters pages.  This is also the call for submissions for the fourth World-A-Week challenge!  The winning image and story will be posted later today, but I wanted the submission process to get back on track and not entirely fall off the rails.

This week’s World-A-Week Challenge category: ANYTHING GOES.  People, places, things or items–any image that speaks to you, of absolutely anything.  If nothing on the web (really?) appeals, go out and snap a picture of something fun or creepy with your phone.  I love the images that have come in so far.  I’m adding them to an ever-growing database of stuff to post in future challenges.  So thank you for making the Challenges the successes they’ve been to date!  All I ask, is no porn please.  So let the submissions begin!  You can either submit them via a link in the comments section of this post, or via email to latenightstirfry@gmail.com.

Tumblr Tuesday (Belated): Week 3

This Week’s World-A-Week Challenge: We’ve tried places and people, so that just leaves one last base category: Things!  Send me a picture of anything, cryptic or mundane, fantastic or humdrum, and I’ll turn it into a story!  We’re going to try submissions a bit different this time–submit by comment!  This time around, if you have a picture you want entered into the Challenge, just leave a comment on this post with the picture included.

Obviously, this post is 3 days late, so deadline for submissions is not until Sunday at 10pm.  That’s pretty much 2 full days worth of time to think of pictures you’d like to send in!  I don’t have a big baglog of “thing” photos on my tumblr, so I need you guys to submit well, and submit often.  Don’t be afraid of stumping me…I like a good challenge!
